![]() In 525 BC, the Persian Empire, led by King Cambyses II, invaded Egypt. They also fought off invasions from a new foreign threat, the Babylonians. They re-established many of the old traditions including building great monuments to the pharaohs and the gods. Psamtik II, and the later leaders of the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty, sought to return Egypt to its former glory. Under the leadership of Pharaoh Psamtik II Egypt united and the Late Period began. It was the invasion of the Assyrians that caused Egypt to reunite to fight off foreign invaders. In the years before the Greeks arrived, power changed hands often with four short lived dynasties (Twenty-Eighth to the Thirty-First) ruling Egypt.Įgypt had been divided during the Third Intermediate Period.
